Hello and welcome to the first edition of THE POSTCARD, Unregistered’s fortnightly roundup of recommendations.
Thoughts, tools, and treats
This week, I’d like to introduce you to the fellow Substackers on my blogroll.
Enfant Terrible by Remy Bazerque
Few authors write about mental health and creativity the way Remy does. He also invented a merveilleux series of articles titled “Bizarre French Expression of the Month.” And just like yours truly, Remy posts in a second language.
Castalia by Sam Kahn
Incredibly productive without compromising on quality, Sam’s manifest Against Stories won me over for his intellectual journal. He also sparked an insightful debate about writers and branding. Plus, he’s a great editor.
Escaping Flatland by Henrik Karlsson
A master of the meandering, Henrik ran the numbers on quality and quantity. He also skimmed no less than 42 biographies for just one article. His Substack requires and deserves time.
Experimental History by Adam Mastroianni
Adam falsifies everybody who thinks science, fun, and excellent writing are mutually exclusive. He’s a truly independent mind whose headlines are as un-SEO-y as possible. Read this guest article in the New York Times to get a taste, then head back to Substack and find out why smart people aren’t happier.
The Weekly Dish by Andrew Sullivan
A legendary publication written by a pioneer of independent media. Andrew’s takes infuriate many, but he truly welcomes dissent and fosters debates among grown-ups. The Dish is paywalled entirely, so you may read this classic piece from New York Magazine to get to know Andrew.
Noteworthy
“Our entire existence, or most of it, is limited because we must constantly be on guard and look for signals or signs of evidence of something that might be dangerous to us. (...) Our challenge as a society will be to be prepared while maintaining the desire for a more fulfilling life.“
—The Israelian writer David Grossman, a strong proponent of a two-state solution, in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine on January 26, 2024
A mystery link leading into the unknown
This time, quite literally.
As always,
Dirk
P.S.: Feel free to send me pointers to articles, books, sites, pods, tools, and treats that could be interesting for this roundup. While I cannot promise to link them, I read and appreciate every hint.
